Description

Pharmacology
- Broad-spectrum antibiotic
- Inhibits bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
- Required for DNA replication, transcription repair and recombination
- In vitro activity against gm-ve and gm+ve microorganisms
Dosage
- 250 mg or 500 mg or 750 mg strength
- Oral administration
- Can be taken without regard to food
- Intravenous infusion for injection
- Administration for acute sinusitis, exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, urinary-tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, enteric fever, diarrhea, cholera, shigellosis & enteritis
Administration
- Instructions for Levofloxacin Infusion
- Check for leaks
- Do not use if solution is cloudy or precipitate is present
- Suspend container from hanger
- Regulate rate of administration with flow control clamp
Interaction
- Avoid co-administration with solutions containing multivalent cations
- Reduced absorption with antacids, Iron and Adsorbents
- Increased risk with NSAID and Warfarin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin
- History of hypersensitivity to quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects
- Risk of retinal detachment
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Rare side-effects like tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing
- Effects on the unborn child or nursing infant are unknown
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate water intake to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
- Low potential for acute toxicity
- Stomach should be emptied in case of acute overdosage
- Patients should be kept under observation
- Appropriate hydration should be maintained
