Description
Levoking is a synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration. Chemically levofloxacin is a chiral fluorinated carboxyquinolone.
Indications
- Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis
- Treatment of exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of enteric infections
Pharmacology
Levofloxacin exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase, the enzymes required for DNA replication, transcription repair and recombination. It has in vitro activity against a wide range of gm-ve and gm+ve microorganisms.
Dosage
- Oral: 250mg, 500mg, or 750mg every 24 hours
- Intravenous: 250mg, 500mg by slow infusion over 60 minutes every 24 hours, or 750mg by slow infusion over 90 minutes every 24 hours
Administration
Levofloxacin infusion should be administered by intravenous infusion. Follow specific instructions for use including checking for leaks, suspending the container, regulating the rate of administration, etc.
Interaction
Avoid co-administration with solutions containing multivalent cations. Antacids, Iron, and Adsorbents reduce absorption. NSAID may increase the risk of CNS stimulation. Warfarin may increase the risk of bleeding.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents

Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer by slow intravenous infusion
- Adequate hydration to avoid concentrated urine
- Dose adjustment in renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
Low potential for acute toxicity. In case of overdosage, empty the stomach and maintain appropriate hydration.
