Indications

Description
Synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone derivative antibacterial agent for oral administration
Pharmacology
Exerts antibacterial action by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase
Dosage
- Usual dose of 250 mg or 500 mg or 750 mg orally every 24 hours
- Usual dose of 250 mg or 500 mg or 750 mg administered by slow infusion over 60-90 minutes every 24 hours
Administration
- Levofloxacin infusion instructions
- Sequential therapy (intravenous to oral) may be instituted at the discretion of the physician
Interaction
- Avoid co-administration with solutions containing multivalent cations
- Antacids, Iron and Adsorbents reduce absorption
- NSAID may increase the risk of CNS stimulation
- Warfarin may increase the risk of bleeding
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or quinolone antimicrobial agents
Side Effects
- Risk of retinal detachment
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
- Rare occurrence of phototoxicity (0.1%)
- Rarely seen: tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended for use during pregnancy or nursing
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer by slow intravenous infusion
- Take adequate amount of water during administration
- Exercise dose adjustment in renal insufficiency
Overdose Effects
Low potential for acute toxicity, stomach should be emptied, maintain appropriate hydration
