Indications

  • Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
  • Treatment of bacterial corneal ulcer
  • Treatment of blepharitis

Pharmacology

  • Synthetic third generation fluoroquinolone bactericidal antibiotic
  • Inhibits bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase enzymes
  • Broad spectrum activity against Gram-positive ocular pathogens
  • Broad spectrum activity against Gram-negative ocular pathogens

Dosage & Administration

  • 0.5% eye drop for adults and children 1 year and older
  • 1-2 drops every 2 hours for the first 2 days
  • 1-2 drops every 4 hours for days 3-7
  • 1.5% eye drop for adults and children 6 years and older
  • 1-2 drops every 30 minutes to 2 hours for days 1-3
  • 1-2 drops every 1 to 4 hours for day 4 through treatment completion
  • Not established for children under 1 year

Interaction

  • Not conducted specific drug interaction studies
  • Systemic administration may elevate plasma concentrations of theophylline
  • May interfere with the metabolism of caffeine
  • May enhance the effects of oral anticoagulant warfarin

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Levofloxacin
  • Hypersensitivity to other quinolones
  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication
