Indications

  • Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis

Pharmacology

  • Sterile topical ophthalmic solution
  • Broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against Gram-positive ocular pathogens
  • Active against Gram-negative ocular pathogens
  • Inhibits bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase enzymes

Dosage & Administration

  • 0.5% eye drop for adults and children 1 year and older
  • 1-2 drops every 2 hours for first 2 days
  • 1-2 drops every 4 hours for days 3-7
  • 1.5% eye drop for adults and children 6 years and older
  • 1-2 drops every 30 minutes to 2 hours for days 1-3
  • 1-2 drops every 1 to 4 hours from day 4 to completion
  • Safety and effectiveness not established for children <1 year

Interaction

  • No specific drug interaction studies conducted with Levoquin TS eye drops
  • Systemic administration of some quinolones may elevate plasma concentrations of theophylline
  • May interfere with the metabolism of caffeine
  • May enhance the effects of oral anticoagulant warfarin and its derivatives

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Levofloxacin
  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to other quinolones
  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any components of the medication

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C
  • Should be used during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
  • Not measured in human milk
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi
  • Discontinue use and institute alternative therapy if superinfection occurs
