Indications
- Prevent fertilization in case of unprotected intercourse
- Use within 12 hours to 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse
- Forgotten consecutive 3 contraceptive pills
- Broken, slipped, or improperly removed condom
- Expelled intrauterine device
- Moved or removed vaginal diaphragm or contraceptive cap
- Failure of coitus interruptus or rhythm method
- In case of rape

Description
- Emergency contraceptive for women
- Should be used within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse
- Should not be taken as a regular birth control pill
- Also known as Post Coital Pill and Morning After Pill
- Active substance: I-Pill DS
Pharmacology
- Suppresses gonadotropins, inhibiting ovulation
- Binds to progesterone and androgen receptors
- Slows release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
- Inhibits rupture of follicles and viable egg release from ovaries
Dosage
- 1.5 mg tablet: take as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, preferably within 12 hours and no later than 72 hours
- 0.75 mg tablet: take first tablet within 72 hours and second tablet after 12 hours
Administration
- Oral use
- Take with a glass of water
Interaction
- Simultaneous administration with certain anticonvulsant agents can reduce or suppress effectiveness
- Interaction with rifampicin and griseofulvin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levonorgestrel or any of the excipients
Side Effects
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dizziness, fatigue, headache
- Abdominal pain
- Feeling of breast tenderness
- Bleeding
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not indicated in case of pre-existing pregnancy
- Cannot interrupt pre-existing pregnancy
- No adverse effects of progestogen on fetus malformation
- Levonorgestrel is secreted into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Must be used exceptionally
- Does not allow to prevent pregnancy in every instance
- Hormonal overdosing is not advisable in case of regular intake
- Cannot replace regular contraception
- Mandatory to check absence of pregnancy by performing a pregnancy test
- Does not replace necessary precautions against sexually transmitted diseases
- Not recommended in case of ectopic pregnancy, salpingitis, or severe digestive disease
Overdose Effects
- No acute toxicity demonstrated with intake of several doses
- Efficacy not guaranteed if dose has been omitted
