Therapeutic Class

Indications

  • Asthma
  • Chronic Bronchitis

Mode of Action

Stimulates beta-2-adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscles, causing relaxation and improved pulmonary function

Dosage & Administration

  • Salbutamol Tablet or Syrup:
    • Children:
      • 2-6 years: 2.5ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
      • 6-12 years: 5ml syrup, 3-4 times daily
      • Over 12 years: 5-10ml syrup, 3-4 times daily or 2-4mg tablet, 3-4 times daily
    • Adults: 2-4mg tablet, 3-4 times daily
  • Salbutamol Respirator Solution:
    • Adults & Elderly: 0.5-1.0ml up to 4 times a day
    • Children under 12 years: 0.5ml diluted to 2.0-4.0ml with normal saline, or higher doses if required
  • Salbutamol Nebulizer Solution:
    • Adults & Elderly: 2.5-5mg up to 4 times a day
    • Children under 12 years: 2.5mg up to 4 times a day, or higher doses if required
  • Salbutamol Injection:
    • Adults:
      • Salbutamol I.V. infusion solution is used to prepare a solution for continuous intravenous infusion
      • Infusion rates providing 3 to 20 micrograms salbutamol/minute are usually adequate
      • Intravenous admixtures should be visually inspected prior to administration
    • Children and Adolescents: Dosage not established
  • Salbutamol Inhalation Capsule:
    • Adults: Relief of bronchospasm and maintenance therapy
    • Children: Relief of acute bronchospasm and maintenance therapy

Pregnancy & Lactation

Use with caution, potential risk to the fetus and potential excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

Use with caution in patients with hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, occlusive vascular disorders, hypertension, aneurysms, hypokalaemia, diabetes mellitus, closed angle glaucoma, and those receiving antihypertensive therapy
