Indications
- Local anaesthetic for infiltration blockade and intravenous regional analgesia
- Prevention and treatment of ventricular tachyarrhythmias
Description
Sterile, non-pyrogenic, aqueous solution containing Locaine, a local anaesthetic of the amide type with fast onset and intermediate duration of action
Pharmacology
Acts by inhibiting sodium influx through sodium specific ion channels in the neuronal cell membrane, particularly the voltage-gated sodium channels
Dosage
- Adjusted according to patient response and site of administration
- Maximum individual dose should not exceed 4.5mg/kg of body weight for healthy adults
- Recommended maximum total dose is 300 mg for adults
- Various recommended doses for different types of procedures
Administration
Intravenous dose of 1 mg.kg-1 may be given over 2 min, with potential repeated doses
Interaction
Cimetidine can impair metabolism of lidocaine, increased plasma lidocaine concentrations with beta blockers, and prolonged suxamethonium action
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to anaesthetics of the amide type

- Repeated doses may cause significant increases in blood levels
- Careful monitoring of vital signs and patient's state of consciousness is essential
