Indications
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults
- Improves glycaemic control
- Can be used as monotherapy or in combination therapy with other medications
Pharmacology
- Inhibitor of DPP-4 enzyme
- Increases concentrations of active incretin hormones
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells
- Decreases secretion of glucagon from pancreatic alpha cells
Dosage & Administration
- 5 mg once daily
- Should be administered concomitantly with metformin if added to metformin
- Consider lower dose of sulfonylurea when used in combination
Interaction
- Weak competitive and weak to moderate mechanism-based inhibitor of CYP isozyme CYP3A4
- Low risk of clinically meaningful interactions with other medicinal products
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients
Side Effects
- Hypoglycaemia
- Nasopharyngitis
- Cough
- Pancreatitis in combination with metformin and sulfonylurea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category B
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Unknown whether it passes into breast milk
