Indications
- Treatment and prophylaxis of mania
- Bipolar disorder and recurrent depression
Pharmacology
- Mechanism of action is still unknown
- Therapeutic action due to inhibition of enzymes or modulation of receptors
- Alters intraneuronal metabolism of catecholamines and sodium transport
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dosage for adults and children over 12 years
- Prophylaxis dosage
- Should be taken with food
Interaction
- Reduced serum levels with certain inhibitors and preparations
- Enhanced hypothyroid effects with iodine salts
- Reduced pressor response to sympathomimetics
Contraindications
- Renal insufficiency
- Cardiovascular insufficiency
- Addison's disease and untreated hypothyroidism

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Decreased tolerance from protracted sweating or diarrhoea
- Supplemental fluid and salt administration under medical supervision
- Reduced or suspended lithium intake during certain conditions
Use in Special Populations
- Dose adjustment for renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- Stopping lithium
- Serum estimations every six hours
- Avoidance of diuretics
- Initiation of osmotic diuresis or alkalinisation of urine
- Possible peritoneal or haemodialysis
