Description

• Treatment of bacterial infections including conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and blepharoconjunctivitis

Indications

• Effective against bacterial infections including conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers induced by Staphylococcus aureus

Pharmacology

• Bacterial gyrase inhibitor
• Effective against gram positive and negative bacteria
• Interferes with bacterial DNA processes
• Target molecule: A-subunit of bacterial enzyme gyrase

Dosage

• Adults and children above 1 year: 2-3 times daily 1 drop into lower conjunctival sac
• Initial treatment application should be more frequent

Administration

• May be taken with or without food

Interaction

• Avoid ophthalmic preparations containing heavy metals
• Should not be used with bacteriostatic ophthalmic antibiotics

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to active ingredient or quinolones
• Long-term treatment may enhance development of secondary fungal infections or support growth of non-susceptible bacteria

Side Effects

• Slight and transient burning reported in 4.7% of users
• Possible photosensitization
• Allergic reactions possible

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Clinical studies not available, use only if benefit outweighs potential risk for fetus or infant

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid intensive exposure to sunlight or UV-radiation

• Practically no risk of adverse effects due to accidental oral ingestion
