Indications

  • Hypertension

Pharmacology

Losartan Potassium is the first non-peptide orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker.

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual starting and maintenance dose of 50 mg once daily for most patients
  • 25 mg twice daily recommended prior to increasing the dose for inadequate antihypertensive effect
  • lower starting dose of 25 mg once daily recommended for patients over 75 years
  • Total daily dose ranges from 25 mg to 100 mg

Interaction

  • Rifampicin and fluconazole reduce levels of active metabolite of Preslow
  • Concomitant use of Preslow and hydrochlorothiazide may lead to potentiation of the antihypertensive effects
  • Concomitant use of potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium may lead to increases in serum potassium
  • The antihypertensive effect of losartan may be attenuated by the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin
  • The use of ACE-inhibitor, angiotensin receptor antagonist, an anti-inflammatory drug and a thiazide diuretic at the same time increases the risk of renal impairment

  • Patients hypersensitive to any component of this product
  • Patients with diabetes taking Aliskiren

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid use during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy
  • Symptomatic hypotension may occur in volume-depleted patients
  • Significantly increased plasma concentration in cirrhotic patients
  • Changes in renal function including renal failure reported in renal impaired patient

Use in Special Populations

  • No initial dosage adjustment necessary in patients with mild renal impairment
  • Lower starting dose recommended for moderate to severe renal impairment or patients on dialysis
  • Lower dose should be considered for patients with a history of hepatic impairment
