Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- Renal protection in type-2 diabetic patients with proteinuria
Pharmacology
- Non-peptide orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker
- Binds to AT1 receptor
- Reduces vasoconstriction
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting and maintenance dose of 50 mg once daily
- 25 mg twice daily if 50 mg is inadequate
- Starting dose of 25 mg once daily for patients with intravascular volume-depletion
- Dose range from 25 mg to 100 mg
Interaction
- Reduced levels with Rifampicin and fluconazole
- Potentiation with hydrochlorothiazide
- Increase in serum potassium with potassium-sparing diuretics and supplements
- Attenuation by indomethacin
- Increased risk of renal impairment with ACE-inhibitor and thiazide diuretic
Contraindications
- Pregnant women
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Concomitant use with Aliskiren in patients with diabetes

- Reduced fetal renal function

- Increased plasma concentration in cirrhotic patients

Use in Special Populations
- No initial dosage adjustment in patients with mild renal impairment
- Lower starting dose for moderate to severe renal impairment
- Lower dose for patients with hepatic impairment
- Contraindicated in pregnancy and hypersensitivity to losartan
