Indications
- Treatment of hypertension
- Renal protection in Type-2 diabetic patients with proteinuria
Pharmacology
- Non-peptide orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker
- Binds to AT1 receptor in various tissues
- Reduces vasoconstriction and aldosterone release
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dose of 50 mg once daily for most patients
- Potential dose adjustment for patients over 75 years
- Total daily dose ranging from 25 mg to 100 mg
Interaction
- Reduction in active metabolite levels with rifampicin and fluconazole
- Potentiation of antihypertensive effects with hydrochlorothiazide
- Potential increase in serum potassium with potassium-sparing diuretics
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in pregnant women
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component
- Avoid administration with Aliskiren in diabetic patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects
- Common side effects include dizziness, diarrhea, and cough
- Other possible side effects include fatigue, abdominal pain, and nausea
