Indications

  • Treatment of hypertension
  • Reduction of stroke risk in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy

Pharmacology

  • Inhibition of angiotensin II binding to AT1 receptor
  • Reduction of aldosterone secretion
  • Vasoconstrictor blocking effect
  • Thiazide diuretic effect on renal tubular mechanisms of electrolyte reabsorption

Dosage

  • Usual starting dose of 50/12.5 combination tablet
  • Maximum dose of 100/25 combination tablet
  • Antihypertensive effect attained within three weeks
  • No initial dosage adjustment for elderly patients
  • Severe hypertension initial treatment dosage

Administration

  • May be administered with other antihypertensive agents
  • May be administered with or without food

Interaction

  • No significant drug-drug interactions with Hydrochlorothiazide
  • Potential increase in serum potassium with concomitant use of potassium-sparing diuretics
  • Potentiation of orthostatic hypotension with certain drugs
  • Dosage adjustment of antidiabetic drugs may be required
  • Additive effect or potentiation with other antihypertensive drugs

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
  • Anuria
  • Hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs

Use in Special Populations

  • Regimens of therapy based on creatinine clearance

Overdose Effects
