Indications

Pharmacology

  • Corticosteroid inhibition of inflammatory response

Dosage & Administration

  • 0.5% ophthalmic suspension: Instill 1 drop four times a day for ocular inflammation
  • 1% ophthalmic suspension: Instill 1 drop 2 times a day for ocular inflammation
  • 0.5% ophthalmic ointment: Apply a small amount four times daily after surgery
  • Ophthalmic gel: Instill one to two drops four times daily after surgery
  • Use in children not established
  • No overall differences in safety and effectiveness observed in elderly patients

Interaction

  • Topical administration not expected to affect the pharmacokinetics of systemically administered medicinal products

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in viral diseases of cornea and conjunctiva
  • Mycobacterial infection of the eye
  • Fungal diseases of ocular structures
  • Known or suspected hypersensitivity to ingredients
  • Known hypersensitivity to other corticosteroids

Side Effects

  • Elevated intraocular pressure
  • Optic nerve damage
  • Visual acuity and field defects
  • Cataract formation
  • Secondary ocular infection
  • Corneal or scleral thinning
  • Ocular adverse reactions in 5%-15% of patients
  • Non-ocular adverse reactions in less than 15% of patients

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C
  • Reproductive toxicity in animal studies
  • Unknown potential risk for humans
  • Caution in nursing women

Precautions & Warnings

  • Re-evaluation if symptoms fail to improve after two days
  • Intraocular pressure monitoring if used for 10 days or longer
  • Consideration of fungus invasion in persistent corneal ulceration
  • Physician consultation for aggravated redness or itching
  • Avoidance of contact lenses during therapy
