Indications

Pharmacology
- Mildly acting antacid
- Laxative
- Osmotic properties in the luminal fluid
- Useful for emptying the bowel prior to surgical procedures
- Can help eliminate parasites in some cases of poisoning
Dosage & Administration
- Laxative dosage for adults: 2-4 Tablespoonful with a full glass of water
- Laxative dosage for children (6-11 years): 1-2 Tablespoonful with a full glass of water
- Laxative dosage for children (2-5 years): 1-3 Teaspoonful with a full glass of water
- Antacid dosage for adults: 1-3 teaspoonful (5 to 15 ml) up to 4 times daily with water
- Antacid dosage for children (1-3 years): ¼ teaspoonful
- Antacid dosage for children (3-6 years): ¼-½ teaspoonful
- Antacid dosage for children (6-12 years): ½-1 teaspoonful
Interaction
- Decreases absorption of other drugs
- Interferes with digoxin
- Interferes with mycophenolate
- Interferes with tetracycline antibiotics
- Interferes with certain azole antifungals
- Interferes with quinolone antibiotics
Contraindications
- Not recommended for use where laxative is contraindicated
- Long term treatment contraindicated in patients with renal failure
Side Effects
- May cause diarrhea

- Avoid in patients with renal and hepatic failure
- Avoid in patients with heart block and myocardial disease
- Cautious use in pregnancy
