Mebendox 100 mg/5 ml (Oral Suspension)

Indications

• Treatment of threadworms
• Treatment of whipworms
• Treatment of roundworms
• Treatment of hookworms

Pharmacology

• Synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic
• Active against most nematodes
• Inhibits formation of worms' microtubules
• Causes worms' glucose depletion
• 2-10% of oral dose absorbed from GI tract
• Peak plasma concentration within 30 minutes to 7 hours
• Highly bound to plasma protein
• Elimination half-life of 2.8 to 9 hours

Dosage & Administration

• 100 mg single dose for threadworms
• 100 mg twice daily for 3 days for whipworms, roundworms, hookworms
• Second dose may be needed after 2 weeks if reinfection occurs

Interaction

• Cimetidine may inhibit Mebendox metabolism and increase plasma concentration

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to Mebendazole or any component of the formulation

Side Effects

• Transient symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea
• Rash, urticaria, and angioedema
• Very rare cases of convulsions
• Neutropenia and agranulocytosis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not recommended in pregnant women
• Caution should be exercised when administered to nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Periodic assessment of organ system functions advisable during prolonged therapy
• Potential risk to fetus in women taking Mebendox during pregnancy
• Cleanliness important to prevent reinfection and transmission of the infection

Use in Special Populations

• Not extensively studied in children under two years
• Relative benefit/risk should be considered in children under two years

Overdose Effects

• Accidental overdosage may cause gastrointestinal complaints lasting a few hours
• Vomiting and purging should be induced in case of overdose
