Indications

Palliative treatment of advanced carcinoma of the breast or endometrium
Treatment of anorexia, cachexia, or significant weight loss in patients with AIDS & cancer

Pharmacology

Synthetic antineoplastic and progestational drug
Mechanism involves inhibition of pituitary gonadotrophin production and decrease in estrogen secretion
Modifies the action of other steroid hormones and exerts direct cytotoxic effect on tumor cells
Estimates of plasma levels and excretion percentages

Dosage & Administration

Tablet dosage for breast cancer and endometrial carcinoma
Recommended adult initial dosage of Oral Suspension

Interaction

No investigated interactions with concomitant medications
Cautious administration in patients with preexisting problems with excess fluid

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Megestrol Acetate or any component
Known or suspected pregnancy

Side Effects

Weight gain associated with increased appetite
Thromboembolic phenomena including thrombophlebitis and pulmonary embolism
Glucocorticoid effects
Nausea, dyspnea, tumor flare, hyperglycemia, and more

Pregnancy & Lactation

Not recommended during first four months of pregnancy
Excretion in mother's milk and potential effects on newborn

Precautions & Warnings

Close surveillance for recurrent or metastatic cancer patients
Use with caution in patients with a history of thromboembolic disease
