Indications
- Pneumonia and Nosocomial Pneumonia

Pharmacology
Bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis. Potent bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of bacteria.
Dosage
- Adults:
- 500 mg to 1 gm by intravenous administration every 8 hours
- 1 g IV every 8 hours for nosocomial pneumonia, peritonitis, presumed infections in neutropenic patients, septicaemia
- 2 gm IV every 8 hours for meningitis
- Upto 2 gm every 8 hours for cystic fibrosis
- Children:
- 10 to 40 mg/kg intravenously every 8 hours depending on type and severity of infection
- 20 mg/kg every 8 hours for intra-abdominal infections
- 25-40 mg/kg every 8 hours for cystic fibrosis (4-18 years)
- 40 mg/kg IV every 8 hours for meningitis
- 20 mg/kg every 8 hours for febrile neutropenia
Administration
Intravenous Infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes or as intravenous bolus (5 to 20 ml) over approximately 3-5 minutes
Interaction
Probenecid competes with Betanem for active tubular secretion, may reduce serum valproic acid levels
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the product

- Thrombophlebitis
- Pain at the site of injection
- Skin reactions like rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
Discontinue in case of allergic reaction. Use with caution in hepatic disease patients
Special Populations
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
- No dosage adjustments necessary in hepatic impairment
- No dosage adjustments necessary in elderly patients
- Efficacy and tolerability in infants under 3 months not established
Overdose Effects
Accidental overdose could occur, treatment should be symptomatic
