Description
- Onmet tablet is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients when dietary management and exercise alone does not result in adequate glycaemic control.

Dosage and Administration
- Usual starting dose for adults: 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day, with dosage increases in increments of 500 mg weekly or 850 mg every 2 weeks
- Maximum daily dose for adults: 2550 mg per day, given in divided doses
Interaction
- Interacts with Furosemide and Nifedipine
- Potential interaction with cationic drugs such as Amiloride, Digoxin, Morphine, etc.
- Certain drugs may produce hyperglycemia and lead to loss of glycemic control
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients
- Acute metabolic acidosis
- Severe renal failure
- Conditions altering renal function or causing tissue hypoxia
Side Effects
- Hemolytic anemia
- Lactic acidosis
- Decrease in vitamin B12 absorption
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Taste disturbance
- Gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential risks
Precautions and Warnings
- Excreted by the kidney, necessitating regular monitoring of renal function
- Increases risk of hypoglycemia when used in combination with insulin or insulin secretagogue
- Not advised in conditions causing dehydration or in patients suffering from serious infections or trauma
Use in Special Populations
- Elderly: dosage adjustment based on renal function
- Pediatric population: diagnosis confirmation before treatment initiation
- Children aged between 10 and 12 years: caution recommended
- Renal function assessment before treatment initiation and regularly thereafter
Overdose Effects
- Hypoglycemia not seen with doses up to 85 gm, lactic acidosis may occur, treated as a medical emergency
