  • Onmet tablet is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients when dietary management and exercise alone does not result in adequate glycaemic control.

Dosage and Administration

  • Usual starting dose for adults: 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day, with dosage increases in increments of 500 mg weekly or 850 mg every 2 weeks
  • Maximum daily dose for adults: 2550 mg per day, given in divided doses

Interaction

  • Interacts with Furosemide and Nifedipine
  • Potential interaction with cationic drugs such as Amiloride, Digoxin, Morphine, etc.
  • Certain drugs may produce hyperglycemia and lead to loss of glycemic control

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients
  • Acute metabolic acidosis
  • Severe renal failure
  • Conditions altering renal function or causing tissue hypoxia

Side Effects

  • Hemolytic anemia

  • Decrease in vitamin B12 absorption

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential risks

Precautions and Warnings

  • Excreted by the kidney, necessitating regular monitoring of renal function
  • Increases risk of hypoglycemia when used in combination with insulin or insulin secretagogue
  • Not advised in conditions causing dehydration or in patients suffering from serious infections or trauma

  • Elderly: dosage adjustment based on renal function

Overdose Effects

  • Hypoglycemia not seen with doses up to 85 gm, lactic acidosis may occur, treated as a medical emergency
