Indications
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Monotherapy for adults

Pharmacology
- Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
- Lowers basal and postprandial plasma glucose
- Decreases hepatic glucose production
- Improves insulin sensitivity
- Decreases intestinal absorption of glucose
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dose for adults: 500mg or 850mg once or twice daily
- Usual starting dose for children: 500mg twice daily
- Maximum daily doses for adults: 2000mg for immediate release tablet, 2550mg for extended release tablet
- Renal impaired patient precautions
- Swallow extended release tablet whole
Interaction

Contraindications

- Metformin excreted into human breast milk

- Vitamin B12 level lowering
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia when used with insulin
- Regular monitoring of renal function advised
