Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Monotherapy for adults
  • Treatment for children from 10 years of age and adolescents
  • Reduction of diabetic complications in overweight patients
  • First-line therapy after diet failure

Pharmacology

  • Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
  • Lowers basal and postprandial plasma glucose
  • Decreases hepatic glucose production
  • Improves insulin sensitivity
  • Decreases intestinal absorption of glucose

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual starting dose for adults: 500mg or 850mg once or twice daily
  • Usual starting dose for children: 500mg twice daily
  • Maximum daily doses for adults: 2000mg for immediate release tablet, 2550mg for extended release tablet
  • Renal impaired patient precautions
  • Swallow extended release tablet whole

Interaction

  • No information on Radimet and Furosemide interaction
  • Nifedipine enhances absorption of Radimet
  • Cationic drugs potential for interaction with Radimet
  • No effect on Cimetidine pharmacokinetics

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to active substance or excipients
  • Acute metabolic acidosis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Uncontrolled diabetes risk during pregnancy
  • Metformin excreted into human breast milk
  • Breastfeeding not recommended during metformin treatment

Precautions & Warnings

  • Substantially excreted by the kidney
  • Vitamin B12 level lowering
  • Increased risk of hypoglycemia when used with insulin
  • Regular monitoring of renal function advised
  • Therapy stop before surgery and clinical investigations
  • Annual estimation of Vitamin B-12 levels for continuous therapy patients
  • Interactions with cimetidine and anticoagulants

Use in Special Populations
