Description
- SB-Met XR is used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients when dietary management and exercise alone do not result in adequate glycemic control. It lowers both basal and postprandial plasma glucose.
Dosage Form
- Immediate Release Tablet
- Extended Release Tablet
Recommended Dosage for Adults
- Starting dose of 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day, given with meals
- Maximum daily dose of 2000 mg per day, given in divided doses
- Dosage increases should be made in increments of 500 mg weekly or 850 mg every 2 weeks
Recommended Dosage for Children
- Starting dose of 500 mg twice a day, given with meals
- Maximum dose of 2000 mg per day, given in divided doses
Renal Impaired Patient Dosage
- Do not use in patients with eGFR below 30 mL/min/1.73 m^2
Interaction with Other Drugs
- May interact with Furosemide, Nifedipine, Cationic drugs, Cimetidine, Thiazides, Corticosteroids, Phenothiazines, and more
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients
- Acute metabolic acidosis
- Severe renal failure
- Acute conditions altering renal function
- Conditions causing tissue hypoxia
Side Effects
- Hemolytic anemia
- Lactic acidosis
- Decrease of vitamin B12 absorption
- Taste disturbance
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Liver function test abnormalities
- Skin reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use insulin during pregnancy to reduce risk of malformations
- Metformin excreted into human breast milk
- Breastfeeding not recommended during treatment
Precautions & Warnings
- Excreted by the kidney
- Increases risk of hypoglycemia
- Regular monitoring of renal function advised
- Dose adjustment in elderly subjects
- Regular assessment of renal function necessary

Overdose Effects
- Hypoglycemia has not been seen with SB-Met XR doses up to 85 gm
