Indications

  • Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Management in overweight patients
  • Monotherapy or combination therapy
  • Reduction of diabetic complications

Pharmacology

  • Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
  • Lowers basal and postprandial plasma glucose
  • Improves insulin sensitivity
  • Decreases hepatic glucose production
  • Decreases intestinal absorption of glucose

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage individualized based on effectiveness and tolerance
  • Usual starting dose for adults 500 mg twice a day
  • Usual starting dose for children 500 mg twice a day
  • Dosage increases in increments of 500 mg or 850 mg
  • Maximum recommended daily doses

Interaction

  • No chronic co-administration information with Furosemide
  • Enhancement of absorption with Nifedipine
  • Potential interaction with cationic drugs
  • Certain drugs producing hyperglycemia

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to active substance or excipients
  • Acute metabolic acidosis
  • Severe renal failure
  • Conditions altering renal function
