Indications
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus

Pharmacology

Interaction

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Uncontrolled diabetes during pregnancy associated with increased risk of congenital abnormalities and perinatal mortality

- No adverse effects observed in breastfed newborns/infants
- Breastfeeding not recommended during metformin treatment
Precautions & Warnings
- Substantial excretion by the kidney
- Risk of lactic acidosis increases with impaired renal function
- Lowering of vitamin B12 level
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia when used in combination with insulin
- Regular monitoring of renal function advised
- Therapy cessation before surgery and reinstatement after renal function regain
- Caution in conditions causing dehydration, serious infections, or trauma
- Annual estimation of Vitamin B-12 levels for patients on continuous therapy

Overdose Effects
- No hypoglycemia seen with Meglu ER doses up to 85 gm
- Lactic acidosis seen in overdose circumstances
- Hemodialysis as the most effective method to remove lactate and Meglu ER
