Indications
- Hypertension
Pharmacology
- Centrally acting sympatholytic agent
- Antihypertensive agent
- Prodrug
- Alpha-2 adrenergic receptors agonist
- Reduction of vasoconstrictor adrenergic signals
- Available as intravenous injection
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dosage of 250 mg two or three times a day
- Maximum recommended daily dosage of 3 gm for adults
- Pediatric use based on 10 mg/kg of body weight daily
- Adjustment of other antihypertensive drugs doses when used concomitantly
Interaction
- Potentiation of antihypertensive effect when used with other antihypertensive drugs
- Careful monitoring for symptoms of lithium toxicity when used concomitantly with lithium
- Not recommended to be used concomitantly with ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate
Contraindications
- Active hepatic disease
- Liver disorders previously associated with Methyldopa therapy
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
- Undergoing therapy with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors

Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with a history of previous liver disease or dysfunction
- Use of diuretic to control clinical edema or weight gain
- Discontinuation if edema progresses or signs of heart failure appear
- Recurrence of hypertension after dialysis
- Rare occurrence of involuntary choreoathetotic movements in severe bilateral cerebrovascular disease patients
Use in Special Populations
- No well-controlled clinical trials in pediatric patients
- Dosing in pediatric patients supported by evidence from published literature regarding the treatment of hypertension in pediatric patients

- Employment of symptomatic and supportive measures in case of overdosage
- Gastric lavage or emesis to reduce absorption if ingestion is recent
- Infusions to promote urinary excretion if ingestion has been earlier
