Dosage & Administration

  • Administered by IM or IV infusion
  • Administered intravenously over a period of several minutes
  • High dose therapy recommended in certain cases
  • Dosage may vary from 10 to 40 mg depending on the condition being treated
  • Reduction of dosage should be gradual
  • Dosage in pediatric patients varies depending on disease being treated
  • Intravenous infusion over at least 30 minutes for the treatment of acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis

Contraindications

  • Systemic fungal infections
  • Known hypersensitivity
  • Intrathecal administration
  • Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura

Side Effects

  • Fluid and electrolyte disturbances
  • Muscle weakness
  • Peptic ulcer with possible perforation and hemorrhage
  • Impaired wound healing
  • Increased intracranial pressure
  • Development of Cushingoid state
  • Posterior subcapsular cataracts
  • Negative nitrogen balance due to protein catabolism
  • Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation
  • Sterile abscess
  • Hypotension or hypertension

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Corticosteroids shown to be teratogenic in many species
  • Corticosteroids appear in human milk
  • Potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants

Precautions & Warnings

  • Sensitive to heat
  • Lowest possible dose should be used
  • Reduction in dosage should be gradual
  • Discontinuation of corticosteroids may result in clinical improvement

Use in Special Populations

  • Adverse effects similar to those in adults in pediatric patients
  • Decrease in growth velocity in pediatric patients
  • No sufficient data for subjects aged 65 and over

Overdose Effects

  • Treatment by supportive and symptomatic therapy
  • Temporary reduction of dosage for chronic over dosage
