Description
- Predixa is a potent anti-inflammatory steroid with greater potency than Prednisolone, and less tendency to induce sodium and water retention. It has anti-inflammatory potency, impacts kidney and fluid & electrolyte balance, lipid, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism, skeletal muscle, cardiovascular system, immune system, nervous system, and endocrine system.

Dosage and Administration
- Usual daily range of 2-48 mg in divided doses
- Initial dosage may vary from 4-48 mg per day based on specific disease entity
- Maintenance dosage should be determined by decreasing initial drug dosage
- Treatment of acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis with specific dosage guidelines

Interaction
- Erythromycin, Clarithromycin, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Rifampin, and Ketoconazole inhibit metabolism of Predixa
- Estrogens, including birth control pills, can increase corticosteroid effect
- Cyclosporin affects metabolism of Predixa
- Potential interactions with blood thinners
Contraindications
- Systemic fungal infections
- Known hypersensitivity to components
Side Effects
- Short courses are usually well-tolerated
- Long-term, high doses may produce serious side effects
- Potential range of side effects from mild annoyances to serious irreversible bodily damage
- Adrenal gland suppression with prolonged use
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Pregnancy category C
- Should be given only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Not adequately evaluated in nursing mothers
Precautions and Warnings
- Adrenocortical insufficiency may persist after therapy discontinuation
- Enhanced effect on patients with hypothyroidism and cirrhosis
- Cautious use in patients with ocular herpes simplex and hypoprothrombinemia

- Reported acute toxicity and/or death are rare
- No specific antidote available
- Treatment is supportive and symptomatic
