Indications
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the cornea
- Treatment of steroid-responsive inflammation of the anterior segment of the globe
Pharmacology
- Prednisolone decreases inflammation by inhibiting migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes
- Prednisolone reverses increased capillary permeability
- Prednisolone suppresses the immune system by reducing the activity and production of lymphocytes
- Prednisolone suppresses the immune system by reducing the activity and production of eosinophils
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Instill one drop into the conjunctival sac two to four times daily
- Paediatric dosage: Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established
- Initial 24 to 48 hours may require increased dosing frequency if necessary
- Care should be taken not to discontinue the therapy before completing the course

- No significant drug interactions reported
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in viral diseases of the cornea
- Contraindicated in viral diseases of the conjunctiva
- Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to any ingredients of the preparation
- Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to other corticosteroids
Side Effects
- Elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP)
- Possible development of glaucoma
- Infrequent optic nerve damage
- Posterior subcapsular cataract formation
- Delayed wound healing
- Fungal and viral infections of the cornea may develop with long-term applications
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
Precautions & Warnings
- Shake the bottle well before use
- Prolonged use may result in damage to the optic nerve
- Prolonged use may result in defects in vision
- Routine monitoring of intraocular pressure if used for longer periods
Overdose Effects
- A one-time accidental overdose generally will not cause acute problems
- Long-term overdose may show general side effects
- In accidental overdose, sufficient water should be taken to dilute the medication
