Indications

  • Peptic ulcer diseases
  • Gastroesophageal reflux diseases
  • Ulcer induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Eradication of Helicobacter pylori (in combination with antibiotics)
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome

Pharmacology

  • Proton pump inhibitor
  • Suppression of final step in gastric acid production
  • Covalently binds to H+/K+ATPase enzyme system

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for benign gastric ulcer: 40 mg daily in the morning for 4 weeks
  • Dosage for gastro-esophageal reflux disease: 20-40 mg daily in the morning
  • Dosage for duodenal ulcer: 40 mg daily in the morning for 2 weeks

Interaction

  • No significant drug interactions observed in clinical studies

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any components of the formulation

Side Effects

  • Common side effects: headache, diarrhea
  • Rarely included side effects: abdominal pain, flatulence, rash, insomnia, hyperglycemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA Pregnancy Category: B
  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Excreted in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Tablets should not be split, chewed or crushed
  • Long-term therapy may lead to malabsorption of cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12)

Overdose Effects

  • No known symptoms of overdosage in humans
  • Highly protein bound, not readily dialyzable
