Description

Amotrex is an antibiotic medication used for the treatment and prevention of various infections caused by bacteria and parasites. It is available in tablet, suspension, gel, suppository, and intravenous infusion forms. The medicine is also effective in the prevention of post-operative infections, treatment of septicaemia, and other specified conditions.

DosageGuidelines

  • Adults:
    • Trichomoniasis:
      • 200 mg tid or 400 mg bid for 7 days
      • 800 mg in the morning and 1-2 gm at night for 2 days
    • Intestinal Amoebiasis: 800 mg tid for 5 days
    • Extra-Intestinal & Asymptomatic Amoebiasis: 400-800 mg tid for 5-10 days
    • Giardiasis: 2 gm once daily for 3 days
    • Acute Ulcerative Gingivitis: 200 mg tid for 3 days
    • Acute Dental Infections: 200 mg tid for 3-7 days
    • Bacterial Vaginosis:
      • 400 mg bid for 7 days
      • 2 gm as a single dose for 1 days
    • Leg Ulcers and Pressure Sores: 400 mg tid for 7 days
    • Anaerobic Infections: 800 mg initially and then 400 mg tid for 7 days
    • Surgical Prophylaxis: 400 mg tid started 24 hours before surgery for 1 days
  • Children:
    • Trichomoniasis: Dose varies based on age
    • Intestinal Amoebiasis: Dose varies based on age
    • Extra-Intestinal & Asymptomatic Amoebiasis: Dose varies based on age
    • Giardiasis: Dose varies based on age
    • Acute Ulcerative Gingivitis: Dose varies based on age
    • Acute Dental Infections: Dose varies based on age
    • Bacterial Vaginosis: Dose varies based on age

Pharmacology

Metronidazole, the active ingredient, is a member of the imidazole class of antibacterial drugs and is therapeutically classified as an antiprotozoal agent. Its 5-nitro group is reduced by anaerobes metabolically, leading to bactericidal action through interaction with DNA.
