Description
Alkazol is an antibiotic medication used for the treatment and prevention of bacterial and parasitic infections. It is also known to prevent vaginal infections, control liver, skin, joint, brain, and respiratory tract infections. The medication prevents the growth of bacteria and parasites.
DosageAndAdministration
- TabletAndSuspension:
- 200 mg tid or 400 mg bid for 7 days (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)
- 800 mg in the morning and 1-2 gm at night for 2 days (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)
- 2 gm as a single dose for 1 day (Adults & Children over 10 yrs)
- 100 mg tid for Children 7-10 yrs
- 100 mg bid for Children 3-7 yrs
- 50 mg tid for Children 1-3 yrs
- 800 mg tid for 5 days (Adults & Children over 10 yrs) for Intestinal amoebiasis
- 400 mg tid for Children 7-10 yrs for Intestinal amoebiasis
- 200 mg qid for Children 3-7 yrs for Intestinal amoebiasis
- 200 mg tid for Children 1-3 yrs for Intestinal amoebiasis

- 7.5 mg/kg tid for Children 1-10 yrs for Anaerobic infections
- 400 mg tid started 24 hours before surgery for 1 day (Adults & Children over 10 yrs) for Surgical prophylaxis
- 7.5 mg/kg tid for Children 1-10 yrs for Surgical prophylaxis
- VaginalGel: One applicator full intravaginally once or twice a day for 5 days
- Suppository:
- 1 g every 8 hours for 3 days, then 1 g every 12 hours (Adults)
- 500 mg every 8 hours for 3 days, then every 12 hours for Children 5-10 years; Over 10 years, follow adult dose (Children)
- 1 g 2 hours before surgery; up to 3 further doses of 1 g may be given every 8 hours for high-risk procedures (Adults)
- 500 mg 2 hours before surgery; up to 3 further doses of 500 mg may be given every 8 hours for high-risk procedures (Children)
- IvInfusion:
- AdultsAndChildrenOver12Years: 500 mg 8 hourly at a rate of 5 ml/minute; maximum of 4 g should not be exceeded during a 24-hour period; treatment for 7 days is typically sufficient, but can be extended, especially for cases where reinfection is likely; for surgical prophylaxis, administration shortly before surgery should be followed by 8-hourly doses for the next 24 hours
- ChildrenUnder12Years: 7.5 mg/kg body weight/day every 8 hours at a rate of 5 ml/minute
Interaction
- Psychotic reactions reported with concurrent use of Alkazol and Disulfiram
- Avoid consumption of alcoholic beverages and alcohol-containing drugs during therapy and for at least one day afterwards
- Potentiation of oral anticoagulant therapy and increased hemorrhagic risk by decreased hepatic catabolism; prothrombin time should be monitored frequently and anticoagulant therapy adjusted during treatment with Alkazol
- Increased plasma levels of lithium may occur with Alkazol use
- Closely monitor serum cyclosporin and serum creatinine levels when co-administering with Alkazol
- Increased elimination of Alkazol resulting in reduced plasma levels when co-administered with phenytoin or phenobarbital
- Reduced clearance of 5-fluorouracil resulting in increased toxicity when co-administered with Alkazol
- Increased plasma levels of busulfan may occur with Alkazol, leading to severe busulfan toxicity
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or other Nitroimidazole derivatives

PrecautionsAndWarnings
- Regularly monitor hematological tests, especially leucocyte count, if Alkazol must be administered for longer than the usually recommended duration
- Administer with caution to patients with hepatic encephalopathy
- Warn patients that Alkazol may darken urine
UseInSpecialPopulations
- HepaticImpairment: Substantial impairment of Alkazol clearance may occur in the presence of advanced hepatic insufficiency; caution should be exercised
- RenalImpairment: No routine dosage adjustment is needed in renal failure
OverdoseEffects
Symptoms of overdose include vomiting, ataxia, and slight disorientation; no specific antidote is available; symptomatic and supportive treatment should be instituted in case of suspected massive overdosages
