Indications

• Pain & inflammation associated with musculoskeletal & joint disorders
• Pain after an operation

Pharmacology

• Acemetacin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug
• Blocks cyclooxygenase in the body

Dosage & Administration

• Recommended starting dose of 120mg/day
• Increase to 180mg/day depending on patient response
• Should be taken with food, milk, or antacid

Interaction

• Reduces antihypertensive effect of b-blockers
• Increased risk of convulsion when used with quinolone
• Concurrent use with aspirin, NSAIDs, or corticosteroids may increase risk of GI bleeding
• Increased risk of methotrexate toxicity when used together

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to Acemetacin or Indomethacin
• Peptic ulcer
• Safety in children not established

Side Effects

• Common side effects include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
• Peptic ulceration, headache, dizziness & vertigo
• Rarely confusion, depressed mood, edema, chest pain, blood urea elevation

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Safety not established in human pregnancy and lactation
• Some animal reproduction studies showed toxic/teratogenic effects on fetus
• Use not recommended during pregnancy and lactation period

Precautions & Warnings

• Caution in elderly people
• History of disorders affecting the stomach or intestines
• Inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease
• Heart failure
