Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
- Targets airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, and altered cellular activity associated with the inflammatory process
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 5 mg tablet (6 to 14 years), 4 mg tablet (2 to 5 years), 4 mg oral granules (6 months to 5 years)
- No dosage adjustment required for mild-to-moderate hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile and oral bioavailability in elderly adults
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs when used concomitantly with Montelukast
- No specific adverse interactions with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs observed
- Phenobarbital decreased the AUC of Monkon by approximately 40%
- Clinical monitoring recommended for potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, abnormal behavior, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, haemorrhage, irritability, malaise, muscle complaints, oedema, seizure, abnormal sensation, sleep disorders
- Rare: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, erythema nodosum, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations, pulmonary eosinophilia, suicidal tendencies, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution advised when given to a nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Continued therapy during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in majority of cases
- Usual supportive measures recommended in case of overdose
