Description

  • Montilab is indicated for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB), and relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR) including seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

Indications

  • Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
  • Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
  • Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis

Pharmacology

  • Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
  • Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
  • Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: 10 mg tablet once daily
  • Pediatric dosage: 5 mg tablet for 6-14 years, 4 mg tablet for 2-5 years, 4 mg oral granules for 6 months-5 years
  • No dosage adjustment in hepatic or renal insufficiency
  • Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly

Interaction

  • No clinically important effects with theophylline, prednisone, oral contraceptives, terfenadine, digoxin, and warfarin
  • No apparent clinical adverse interactions with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs
  • Phenobarbital decreases the AUC of Montilab by approximately 40%

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of Montilab

Side Effects

  • Common: diarrhea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
  • Uncommon: akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, abnormal behavior, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, seizures
  • Rare: angioedema, disorientation, erythema nodosum, hallucination, pulmonary eosinophilia, suicidal tendencies, tremor

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution in nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not for reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
  • Continue appropriate rescue medication during acute exacerbations of asthma
  • Not for use as monotherapy for exercise induced bronchospasm
  • Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity

Overdose Effects

  • No adverse experiences in majority of overdosage reports
  • Usual supportive measures in the event of overdose
