Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibition of the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlation with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- 10 mg tablet once daily for adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older
- 5 mg tablet once daily for pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age
- 4 mg tablet once daily for pediatric patients 2 to 5 years of age
- 4 mg oral granules once daily for pediatric patients 6 months to 5 years of age
- Dosage adjustment for hepatic and renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly and younger adults
Interaction
- Administered with other asthma therapies
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of certain drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs
- Clinical monitoring recommended when co-administered with cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, abnormal behavior, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, haemorrhage, irritability, malaise, muscle complaints, oedema, seizure, sleep disorders
- Rare: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations, pulmonary eosinophilia, suicidal tendencies, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses the placenta in rats and rabbits
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution with nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Not indicated for use in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Therapy can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Should not be abruptly substituted for corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for exercise induced bronchospasm
- Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity
Overdose Effects
- Majority of reports had no adverse experiences
- Usual supportive measures recommended in the event of overdose
