Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibition of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlation with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and adolescents dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage range from 4 mg to 10 mg tablet once daily
- Safety and efficacy established in pediatric patients with asthma
- No dosage adjustment in patients with hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile in elderly and younger adults
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of several drugs
- Used concomitantly with commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of adverse interactions
- Phenobarbital induces hepatic metabolism and decreases the AUC of Xyflo
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, skin reactions
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, sleep disorders
- Rare: Angioedema, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, suicidal tendencies
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Caution recommended during pregnancy and lactation
- Crosses the placenta following oral dosing in rats and rabbits
- Use in pregnant women only if clearly needed
Precautions & Warnings
- Not indicated for reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Patients advised to have appropriate rescue medication available
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Caution for use as monotherapy for the treatment of exercise induced bronchospasm
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in the majority of overdosage reports
- Frequently occurring adverse experiences consistent with the safety profile of Xyflo
