Pharmacology
- Montelukast is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Cysteinyl leukotrienes and leukotriene receptor occupation have been correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 6 to 14 years - 5 mg tablet once daily, 2 to 5 years - 4 mg tablet once daily, 6 months to 5 years - 4 mg oral granules once daily
Hepatic and Renal Insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment required
Elderly Use
- Pharmacokinetic profile and oral bioavailability is similar to younger adults
- Slightly longer plasma half-life in the elderly
Drug Interactions
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of multiple drugs
- Concomitant use with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of adverse interactions
- Phenobarbital decreased the AUC of Antaluk by approximately 40%
