Description
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Indicated for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
- Can be used by adults, adolescents, and pediatric patients
- Dosage for adults and adolescents: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 2-14 years old: varies based on age
- No dosage adjustment required in patients with mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment recommended in patients with renal insufficiency

DosageAndAdministration
- Dosage for adults and adolescents: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6 to 14 years old: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 2 to 5 years old: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6 months to 5 years old: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily, direct administration in the mouth or mixed with cold water/soft food at room temperature
- No dosage adjustment required in patients with mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment recommended in patients with renal insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment required in the elderly
Interaction
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of specific drugs
- Used concomitantly with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs without evidence of clinical adverse interactions
- Interaction with phenobarbital can decrease the AUC of Asmatab by approximately 40%
- Appropriate clinical monitoring recommended when potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers are co-administered with Asmatab
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of this product
SideEffects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, asthenia, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, haemorrhage, irritability, muscle complaints, sleep disorders
- Rare: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations, suicidal tendencies
PregnancyAndLactation
- Crosses the placenta in rats and rabbits
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother
PrecautionsAndWarnings
- Not indicated for the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available for acute exacerbations of asthma
- Should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Patients with known aspirin sensitivity should continue avoidance of aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents while taking Asmatab
OverdoseEffects
- Adverse experiences may include abdominal pain, somnolence, thirst, headache, vomiting, and psychomotor hyperactivity
