Pharmacology
Montelukast is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1).
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and Adolescents: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric Patients:
- 6 to 14 years: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- 2 to 5 years: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
- 6 months to 5 years: Montelukast 4 mg oral granules once daily
- Hepatic Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment required
- Renal Insufficiency: No dosage adjustment recommended
- Elderly Use: Similar pharmacokinetic profile to younger adults, slightly longer plasma half-life
Interaction
No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of specific drugs observed. Caution with cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Caution during nursing.
Precautions & Warnings
- Not Indicated for: Reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate Rescue Medication: Should be available
- Monotherapy: Should not be used for the treatment of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Aspirin Sensitivity: Continue avoidance of aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents
- Exacerbations of Asthma: Therapy can be continued
Overdose Effects
No adverse experiences in majority of reports. Supportive measures should be employed in the event of overdose.

Common Questions
