Indications

  • Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains
  • Effective against Aerobic Gram-positive microorganisms
  • Effective against Aerobic Gram-negative microorganisms

Pharmacology

  • Antimicrobial action from inhibition of topoisomerase II and IV
  • DNA gyrase inhibition involved in replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA
  • Topoisomerase IV enzyme plays a key role in chromosomal DNA partitioning during bacterial cell division

Dosage & Administration

  • One drop in affected eye(s) 2 times daily for 7 days

  • No conducted drug-drug interaction studies

Side Effects

  • Frequently reported ocular adverse events include eye irritation, pyrexia, conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, ocular discomfort, ocular hyperemia, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and tearing

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
  • No adequate and well-documented studies in pregnant women
  • Not measured in human milk, but presumed to be excreted
  • Caution advised during breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi

Use in Special Populations

  • Safety and effectiveness in infants below four months of age not proven
  • Several clinical studies suggest safe use in children younger than one month of age
  • No overall differences in safety and effectiveness observed between elderly and younger patients

Overdose Effects

  • Practically no risk of adverse effects due to accidental ingestion
  • Bottle of 5 ml eye drops solution contains only 25 mg Moxifloxacin, much lower than recommended daily oral dose
