P-Moxlocin 0.5% (Ophthalmic Solution)

Indications

• Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of specified organisms
• Highly effective intraocular antibiotic to prevent postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis

Pharmacology

• Antimicrobial action results from inhibition of topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV
• DNA gyrase is involved in replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA
• Topoisomerase IV plays a key role in the partitioning of the chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division

Dosage & Administration

• Eye Drops: One drop in the affected eye 3 times per day for 7 days
• Eye Ointment: Thinly and evenly apply to the affected eye 3 times a day for first two days, and two times a day for next five days, or as advised by physician
• Intraocular injection: 0.2-0.4 ml dose prior to ocular surgery via intraocular route, final dose determined by the doctor

Interaction

• In vitro studies indicate P-Moxlocin does not inhibit certain cytochrome P450 isozymes

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in patients with history of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any components in the medication

Side Effects

• Frequently reported ocular adverse events such as conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye
• Nonocular adverse events reported at a rate of 1-4% were fever, increased cough, infection, otitis media, etc.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Should be used during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
• Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother

Precautions & Warnings

• Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
• If superinfection occurs, discontinue use and institute alternative therapy
• Patients should not wear contact lenses if they have signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis

• Store below 25°C, do not freeze
• Store in cool and dry place, protected from light
• Keep out of the reach of children, do not touch dropper tip to any surface
• Do not use after one month of first opening
