Degram 300 mg/5 ml (Oral Suspension)

Indications

• Urinary tract infection caused by susceptible Gram-negative organisms
• Proteus species treatment
• Klebsiella species treatment
• Enterobacter species treatment
• Escherichia coli treatment

Mode of Action

• Bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects
• Inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis
• Rapid and complete absorption from the GI tract
• Tissue distribution to kidneys and urine
• Excretion within 24 hours

Dosage & Administration

• Initial adult dosage of 1g every 6 hours for 7 days
• Adult maintenance dosage of 500mg every 6 hours
• Children's dosage based on body weight
• Physician prescribed dosage for children
• Dosage reduction for infants and children

Interaction

• Reports of severe blood containing diarrhea with melphalan
• Concomitant use with probenecid elevating serum concentration
• Potentiation of effect with chlorpromazine and perphenazine

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in infants under 3 months
• Contraindicated in epilepsy patients
• Contraindicated in patients with CNS lesions

Side Effects

• Gastro-intestinal disturbances including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
• Haemolysis in G6PD deficiency
• Allergic reactions including urticaria, rashes, fever
• Arthralgia and eosinophilia
• Myalgia, muscle weakness, phototoxicity, jaundice
• Visual disturbances and convulsions

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Possible cartilage and DNA damage
• Excretion in breast milk
• Report of hemolytic anemia in breastfed child of azotemic mother

Precautions & Warnings

• Risk-benefit consideration during first trimester of pregnancy
• Risk-benefit consideration during breastfeeding
• Consideration for impaired renal or hepatic function
