Antepsin 1000 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Duodenal ulcer
• Gastric ulcer
• Chronic gastritis
• Prophylaxis of gastrointestinal hemorrhage from stress ulceration

Pharmacology

• Non-systemic
• Minimally absorbed
• Promotes healing
• Forms protective barrier
• Inhibits pepsin and bile

Dosage

• Adult dose: 2 gm twice daily or 1 gm four times a day
• Pediatric population safety and efficacy not established
• Elderly: No special dosage requirements
• Prophylaxis dosage: 1 gm orally or via nasogastric tube 4 to 6 times a day

Administration

Take on an empty stomach, do not administer with antacid within 30 minutes

Interaction

• Reduces bioavailability of certain drugs
• Should not be co-administered with citrate preparations
• May lead to bezoar formation when given too closely with enteral feeds

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to sucralfate

Pregnancy & Lactation

Safety not established in pregnant women, use during pregnancy only if clearly needed, caution in breastfeeding women

Precautions & Warnings

• Use with caution in patients with renal dysfunction
• Not recommended for individuals on dialysis
• Caution in severe or chronic renal impairment
• Periodic laboratory testing recommended for patients with renal impairment
• Avoid concomitant use of other aluminium containing medications
• Bezoar reported in severely ill patients

Use in Special Populations

• Not recommended for children under 14 years of age
• No dose adjustments necessary for elderly patients
• Use with caution in renal insufficiency patients
• Patients should not drive if feeling dizzy or drowsy

Overdose Effects

• Symptomatic in few cases
• Minimal risks associated with overdose
• No lethal dose found in animal studies
