Interaction

- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) increases risk of GI bleeding
Contraindications
- known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- asthma or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System: Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological: Pruritus, purpura
- Cardiovascular: Edema, palpitation
- Others: Visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- delay in parturition in animals
- associated with premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension in infants
- excreted in small amounts in breast milk
- careful balancing of benefits to the mother against possible risks to the fetus
- considered by some authorities to be too small to be harmful to a breast-fed infant
- some manufacturers recommend avoiding breastfeeding during Naproxen therapy
Precautions & Warnings
- renal effects
- abnormal renal pathology
- acute interstitial nephritis
- hematuria
- proteinuria
- nephrotic syndrome
- eliminated primarily by the kidneys
- used with caution in patients with significantly impaired renal function
- monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance advised
- use caution in patients with creatinine clearance of less than 20ml/min
- reports of moderate to severe jaundice attributed to Naproxen
