Description
Ulsec is a sucralfate medication indicated for duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, chronic gastritis, and prophylaxis of gastrointestinal hemorrhage. It promotes healing by forming a protective barrier and inhibiting pepsin and bile action.
Dosage
The usual adult dose is 2 gm of sucralfate twice daily or 1 gm four times a day, with a maximum daily dose of 8 gm. For prophylaxis, the usual dose is 1 gm orally or via a nasogastric tube 4 to 6 times a day. Pediatric safety and efficacy has not been established.
Administration
It should be taken on an empty stomach, and antacids should not be administered within 30 minutes of sucralfate.
Interaction
Concomitant administration may reduce the bioavailability of certain drugs such as fluoroquinolones, tetracycline, ketoconazole, and more. Separate administration from other agents should be considered when critical for concomitantly administered drugs. Ulsec should not be co-administered with citrate preparations.
Contraindications
It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to sucralfate.
Side Effects
Common side effects include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and urticaria. Bezoar formation has been reported in some patients.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safety in pregnant women has not been established and caution should be exercised when administered to breastfeeding women.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution should be used in patients with renal dysfunction, as aluminium absorption may increase. It is not recommended for use in individuals on dialysis. Bezoars have been reported, particularly in severely ill patients.
Use in Special Populations
Not recommended for use in children under 14 years of age due to insufficient data on safety and efficacy. Dose adjustments are not necessary for elderly patients. Caution should be used in renal insufficiency patients.
Overdose Effects
Most cases of overdose remain asymptomatic, with reported symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Risks associated with overdose should therefore be minimal.
