Indications
- Treatment of fungal blepharitis
- Treatment of conjunctivitis caused by susceptible organisms
- Treatment of keratitis caused by susceptible organisms
Pharmacology
- Derived from Streptomyces natalensis
- Antifungal effects by binding to sterols in the fungal cell membrane
- In vitro activity against yeast and filamentous fungi
- Primarily fungicidal
- Topical administration produces effective concentration within the corneal stroma
Dosage & Administration
- Preferred initial dosage: 1 drop instilled in the conjunctival sac at 1-2 hours interval
- Frequency of application can be reduced to 1 drop 6-8 times daily after 3-4 days
- Therapy usually continued for 14-21 days for fungal keratitis
- Pediatric use: Safety and effectiveness not established
Interaction
- May increase spread of fungal eye infection when used with topical corticosteroid
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component

- Eye discomfort

- Conjunctival chemosis
- Hyperemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C
- Animal reproduction studies not conducted
- Unknown effects on fetal harm and reproduction capacity
- Caution advised for pregnant and nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Do not touch dropper tip to any surface
- Patient should not wear contact lenses with signs and symptoms of fungal blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis
- Failure to improve keratitis after 7-10 days suggests non-susceptible microorganism
- Continuation of therapy based on clinical re-evaluation and additional laboratory studies
- Adherence of the suspension to areas of epithelial ulceration or retention in the fornices occurs regularly
