Pharmacology
- Inhibits peristaltic activity of smooth muscle
- Binds to opiate receptor in gut wall
- Increases intestinal transit time
- Increases anal sphincter tone
- Extensive presystemic first-pass metabolism
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 2 capsules initially, 1 capsule after loose stool
- Maximum daily dose: 8 capsules
- Children (9-12 years) dosage: 1 capsule after each loose stool, max 6/day
- Children (5-9 years) dosage: 1 capsule 4 times daily, max 4/day
- Chronic diarrhea dosage: 2-4 capsules daily for adults
