Indications

Pharmacology
- Antibacterial agent for urinary tract infections
- Highly soluble in urine
- Imparts a brown color to urine
- Inactivates or alters bacterial ribosomal proteins
- Active against Gram-Positive Aerobes
- Active against Gram-Negative Aerobes
Dosage
- Adult tablet dosage: 50-100 mg four times a day
- Recommended lower dosage for uncomplicated UTIs
- Therapy duration: one week or 3 days after sterile urine
- Long-term suppressive therapy dosage: 50-100 mg at bedtime
- Adult capsule dosage for acute UTIs: 50 mg four times daily for 7 days
- Long-term suppression capsule dosage: 50-100 mg once a day
- Prophylaxis capsule dosage: 50 mg four times daily for procedure and 3 days after
- Nitrofurantoin SR capsule dosage for adults and children over 12 years: One 100 mg capsule every 12 hours for seven days
- Genito-urinary surgical prophylaxis dosage: One capsule twice daily for 3 days
- Nitrofurantoin suspension dosage for children: 5-7 mg/kg/day in four divided doses
- Specific dosage instructions for pediatric patients based on weight
Administration
- To be taken with food
Interaction
- Antacids containing Magnesium Trisilicate reduce absorption rate of Nitrofurantoin
- Uricosuric drugs like Probenecid and Sulfinpyrazone can inhibit renal tubular secretion of Nitrofurantoin
Contraindications
- Anuria, oliguria or significant impairment of renal function
- Pregnant patients at 38-42 weeks, during labor and delivery
- Known hypersensitivity to Nitrofurantoin

Precautions & Warnings
- Discontinue in case of pulmonary reactions
- Avoid antacid preparations containing magnesium trisilicate while taking Nitrofurantoin
Overdose Effects
- Occasional incidents of acute overdosage without specific symptoms
- Induction of emesis recommended
