Indications
- Acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia and related psychoses
- Treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes in bipolar disorder
Pharmacology
- Antipsychotic agent with affinities for serotonin and dopamine receptors
Dosage
- Initial dose of 5-10 mg once daily
- Maximum dose of 20 mg daily
Administration
Can be given without regard to meals
Interaction
- May antagonize the effects of levodopa and dopamine agonists
- Effectiveness influenced by CYP1A2 inducers and inhibitors
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any ingredient
- Known risk for narrow-angle glaucoma

- Use cautiously in patients with history of seizures or low leukocyte/neutrophil counts
- Cautious use in patients with impaired hepatic function
- Caution advised for operating hazardous machinery
Use in Special Populations
- Not studied in subjects under 18 years of age
- Starting dose for elderly patients (age 65 and over) and patients with hepatic or renal impairment is 5 mg/day
